Fire Science, AAS
Overview
The Fire Science program is designed for persons intending to work (or currently working) as a community fire fighter assuming leadership responsibilities and roles.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Learning experiences in this program are designed to assist the student in realizing the following outcomes:
- Demonstrate safe practices in the areas of rescue, EMS, and firefighting in both emergency and nonemergency situations while under supervision to prevent the loss of life, create incident stabilization, and promote incident stabilization by utilizing appropriate strategy, tactics, firefighter skills, activities, and operations while working as an individual and a member of a team.
- Explain and apply strategic tactical priorities for safety, rescue, incident control and loss control for situations including: fire suppression, search and rescue, hazardous materials, and disaster management.
- Use effective written and verbal communication skills to relate information to co-workers, cooperators, and provide outstanding service to the public in the areas of fire prevention, code/standard enforcement, hazard abatement, conflict resolution, fire investigation, as well as in high stress emergency management environments.
- Analyze one's own and team members' physical and mental health as it relates to job requirements and engage in appropriate self-care actions.
- Demonstrate professional conduct by displaying a personal code of ethics, positive work ethics, flexibility, teamwork skills, physical fitness, safe procedures and sensitivity to diverse cultures and individuals.
- Apply safety practices to prevent the occurrence and severity of hostile fires, to mitigate the effect of fire on people and to assist in the determination of the cause of such fires.
- Explain fire service history and culture and how the fire service can change, grow, and adapt to an ever-changing and evolving society using a variety of methodologies and technologies.
Clatsop Community College Structural Fire Science program measures its student’s achievement of program outcomes by students successfully passing each program requirement course. Within each course students are given a course summative exam, simulation and scenario exercises, lab skills, in addition to weekly in class participation and homework.
