WR242 Introduction to Poetry

Part of a three-course workshop sequence that introduces students to the techniques of creative writing in both individual and collections of poetry. Students will examine the historical context, poetic forms, and conventions for this genre of creative writing as well as how contemporary poetry fits in the greater creative writing canon through the lenses of publishing, creativity, and intersectionality. They will produce and workshop original poems and familiarize themselves with a collaborative creative writing critique process. They will also focus on contemporary poetic readings that will expand their views on cultural, canonical, and genre-specific nuance while furthering their creative exploration.
